Longer, Darker, and Thicker Eyelashes!
Mascara no longer needed?
There is a new product on the market called Latisse™ that lengthens, darkens, and thickens eyelashes. It is available only by prescription and you can expect longer, darker, fuller eyelashes in as little as 8 weeks with full results in 16 weeks. Once the product is discontinued however, the lashes go back to their regular size and color. This is a great product for patients who suffer from hypotrichosis (inadequate or not enough eyelashes) either naturally or as a result of chemotherapy.
What is Latisse™
Originally, this product was intended for use in glaucoma patients to lower intraocular pressure (IOP). Soon, patients started seeing that one of its “side effects” was that the lashes grew longer, darker and thicker. In some cases, lashes grew so long, that the patients had to come in periodically to get their lashes trimmed! In order to prevent too much of this pressure lowering drop from getting into the eye, the makers of Latisse™ have come out with a method that prevents all but 5% of the dose from reaching the ocular surface.
How to apply Latisse™
Latisse™ is a once-daily treatment applied directly to the base of the upper eyelashes with a single-use-per-eye disposable applicator. It is applied once nightly after the face is washed, free of make up and contact lenses. Place one drop of Latisse™ solution on the area of the applicator closest to the tip but not on the tip. Then immediately draw the applicator carefully across the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes (where the eyelashes meet the skin) going from the inner part of the eyelashes to the outer part. Blot any excess solution beyond the eyelid margin. Finally, dispose of the applicator after one use. Repeat for the opposite upper eyelid margin using a new, sterile applicator. This helps minimize any potential for contamination from one eyelid to another.
Possible side effects of using Latisse™
If the directions are closely followed, side effects will be minimized. According to the Global Eyelash Assessment, only less than 4% of pts experienced side effects. Some of the side effects they experienced were predominantly:
- conjunctival hyperemia (reddening of the white part of the eyes)
- skin hyperpigmentation (darkening)
- eye pressure lowering
However, if the above application technique is done correctly, this will keep any eye pressure lowering to less than 1 mm Hg. Also, since the product isn’t put directly into the eye, no iris color change was noted.
This product is considered to be cosmetic by the drug companies and they will not cover any fees associated with it.
