Do you find it difficult to keep your eyelids open? Do people ask you if you are tired because your eyelids droop? Do you want to improve your vision and look younger? If you answered yes to any of these questions you may be a good candidate for a surgical procedure called Blepharoplasty. Blepharoplasty is when either the upper and/or lower eyelid is “lifted” to improve vision or the appearance of your eyes. In order to find out if you are a good candidate for this procedure you first need to be seen by an Oculoplastic specialist. An Oculoplastic specialist is an ophthalmologist who specializes in plastic surgery around the eyes. During your consultation the specialist will perform a visual field test that measures if your vision is being affected by your eyelids. First the test is done as you are to see what your everyday peripheral vision is. The second test is done with the eyelids taped opened to see if it improves your peripheral vision. If there is enough improvement, then not only would your chances of being a candidate for Blepharoplasty improve but your insurance may cover the procedure. For the procedure for the upper eyelid it is typical to either remove fatty tissue or to “tighten” the apposition of the eyelid skin. For the bottom eyelid it is typical to either add or removal fatty tissue depending upon what the goal of treatment is.
