For the next few blog entries we will go over some new eye drops that have hit the market recently.  First up is a drop from Bausch & Lomb named Lotemax SM.  Lotemax SM is a corticosteroid eye drop that is used to treat inflammation.  Your eye doctor may have prescribed you Lotemax or Lotemax gel previously for inflammation of the eye(s).  Lotemax SM has the same active ingredient loteprednol etabonate but where it differs is in the concentration of that ingredient.  Lotemax and Lotemax gel are 0.5% while Lotemax SM is 0.38%.

The technology used to decrease the concentration but still deliver a powerful anti-inflammatory effect is through the delivery system of the drug.  They use submicron particles to help the drug penetrate the ocular surface and the cornea.  Studies show that Lotemax SM will penetrate about 2X better than Lotemax gel.  This way they can decrease the concentration of the drug but still get the desired medicinal effect.  This is also helpful in that the dosing is different as well.  Lotemax or Lotemax gel is prescribed for a four times per day dosage while Lotemax SM is only three times per day dosage.

If you have any inflammation issues that you need treated and are wondering if Lotemax SM would work for you please call (860) 233-2020 to schedule an eye exam today.
