IOL Lens Options for Cataract Patients
Do you have Cataracts?
Are you suffering from blurry or foggy vision? Have you become more sensitive to light and find that your night vision has decreased? Then you may have a cataract. If you are experiencing any of the above signs of symptoms, then you should call our office immediately for an appointment. (Learn more about Cataracts in our patient education section.)
Surgical Options for Patients with Cataracts
If you are diagnosed with a cataract, the procedure to remove it isn’t as complicated as it was in the past. In cataract surgery, the natural lens where the cataract forms is removed and replaced with an intraocular lenses, or IOL. If you have your cataracts removed and don’t replace it with anything, then you would have to wear very thick eyeglasses. The first FDA approval for IOLs occurred in 1981. IOLs in most cases only correct distance vision. This leaves you with the need to use glasses for any near vision tasks. However, there is a new IOL called the AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens that can reduce your dependency on glasses.
Clinical Data on the AcrySof® ReSTOR® Lens
The AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens is a revolutionary procedure, 4 out of 5 patients in the supporting clinical study reported never wearing glasses after bilateral cataract surgery! Most patients will not have to wear glasses or will only have to wear glasses some of the time. While 80% of patients will not need to wear glasses, you may need to wear glasses for certain tasks, such as working on a computer. Optimal results are achieved by having the AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens IOL in both eyes. Clinical results showed that without glasses, the majority of patients achieved distance vision of 20/25 after surgery.
AcrySof® Toric IOL
Successful cataract surgery is only part of the story in regaining quality vision for patients with cataracts. Until recently, the only vision correction options for astigmatism correction after cataract surgery were eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, the AcrySof® Toric IOL now makes it possible to correct the astigmatism after cataract surgery.
Does my Insurance pay for the AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens?
When a visually significant cataract is found and surgery is necessary, your insurance should cover the basic traditional costs for cataract surgery with a standard IOL lens. Insurance will not cover the additional cost for the premium lenses.
